A New Year of Hope and Action for Neurons | The news https://ift.tt/lndR7aA Just as most of us enter a new year, we prepare for what lies ahead, feeling energized and ready to take action on our goals. At Save the Rhino, we have a big goal: we want to see all five species of rhino. We are determined to continue to achieve this goal, knowing that it will take time, resources and strong partnerships. So we’re heading into 2025 guided by our long-term goal, with short-term, actionable milestones to drive our vision forward. This week we highlight some of these milestones and share important international meetings and conferences for rhinos over the next 12 months. What will happen to rhinos in 2025? February 2025: Meeting of the African Rhinoceros Specialist Group (AfRSG). Every three years AfRSG Africa’s black and white rhino populations meet to discuss opportunities and challenges. As members of the group, our CEO, Dr Joe Shaw and Grants Lead, Cathy Dean, will join the 2025 meeting in February to work with rhino experts to share knowledge and support the development of continental strategies to grow rhino populations. May 2025: Meeting of the Asian Rhinoceros Specialist Group (AsRSG). Like the AfRSG, the AsRSG meets every few years to share knowledge and update key information on the conservation and status of all three Asian rhinoceros species (Bighorn, Sumatran and Javan). This year, both the AsRSG and the AfRSG will issue important reports in advance of the next CITES CoP, providing the most up-to-date population counts and recovery indicators (more below) November 2025: 30th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) The UN FCCC conference is held annually to assess progress in combating the climate crisis. Given the breadth of climate change and its impacts, the CC covers a wide range of topics each year, many of which directly or indirectly affect rhinos, their habitats, and the people who live around them. One of the main themes of CoP30 is the conservation of forests and biodiversity, making discussions on rhino conservation even more relevant at this year’s conference. November 2025: 20th Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). From November 25 to December 4, 20th The CITES CoP brings countries together to discuss their role in protecting endangered species from international trade. The conference will provide a platform to publish updated numbers of rhino populations, as well as a platform for CITES members to share how they are combating the illegal trade in endangered species of animals and plants. at 19th KK in 2022, there were two important Rhino offers – We expect that proposals for this year’s KB will be submitted in the coming months This year brings both challenges and opportunities. Information shared, joint actions and decisions taken at all of the above international meetings can make a difference for rhinos. Together with our partners and at these important events, we support evidence-based, effective policies, interventions and activities that give greater hope for rhinos now and in the future. Towards the end of the year, we’ll be sharing updates on these events (and more) on our blogs.
